Five people have been charged with trafficking more than $70A million in counterfeit Nike Air Jordan sneakers in a scheme that went through New Jersey and New York,A authorities said.

The sneakers were shipped from China into Newark and then the trademark Nike logo was added to make them look like Air Jordans, saidA Geoffrey S. Berman, the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York. The shoes were then taken to Queens to sell, Berman said.

From January 2016 to July 2018, authorities estimated, more than 385,000 pairs of sneakers were imported from China to pass off as Air Jordans.A 

The authentic Air Jordans the counterfeits were modeled after cost $190 per pair.A The counterfeit scheme cost Nike more than $70 million, Berman said.A
